CRP is an acute phase plasma protein

CRP is produced in the liver and the concentration increases fast as a response to infection, inflammation, and tissue injury (such as burn, surgeries etc.)
The median level in healthy individuals is usually < 0.8 mg
The levels become detectable in 4-6h and peak within 24-48h
When the initial stimulus is resolved, CRP concentration falls back to normal with half-life of 19h
The concentration is proportional to the severity of infection and inflammation

CRP is an unspecific marker that increases especially in bacterial infections

CRP increases markedly in severe bacterial infections such as pneumonia or sepsis (≥ 100 mg/l). Localized bacterial infections such as sinusitis, otitis media, pharyngitis, and UTI increase CRP concentration significantly but less than severe/systemic infections (10-100 mg/l).

Viral infections do not usually stimulate CRP production. It is known that Adenoviruses or Influenza may slightly elevate CRP despite their viral origin.

CRP increases in several different conditions and therefore, elevated concentration is not indicative of any specific pathogen or disease. CRP result is always interpreted together with the clinical assessment of the patient.

Testing procedure

1. Remove the foil cover from the cuvette
2. Take out single sample collector
3. Hold Sample Collector almost horizontally and fill it with sample
4. Check the sample collector is completely filled and without air bubbles, do not wipe the sample collector
5. Insert the sample collector into cuvette within 2 minutes
6. Close the cuvette with the reagent cap
7. On the QuikRead go instrument, select Measure
8. Place the cuvette in the instrument
9. The result appears on the display in less than 2 minutes and the cuvette automatically rises from the measurement well
