
CRP is an acute phase plasma protein
CRP is produced in the liver and the concentration increases fast as a response to infection, inflammation, and tissue injury (such as burn, surgeries etc.)
The median level in healthy individuals is usually < 0.8 mg
The levels become detectable in 4-6h and peak within 24-48h
When the initial stimulus is resolved, CRP concentration falls back to normal with half-life of 19h
The concentration is proportional to the severity of infection and inflammation
